I spent a lot of my evening last night painting terrain, when we weren’t busy going for a walk in the beautiful weather (currently below 75 F, and rain, which is a blessing here anytime before Halloween). The sudden turn of the season has poured life back into my bones and I’ve been able to get lots done hobby wise and at home. I was able to finish the individually-based peasants (pictures above) as well as some “giant” spiders for 15mm fantasy games!
A better view of the spiders, who were previously “counting spiders” from my wife’a preschool teaching tools.
I worked on quite a bit of terrain as well! Above are the three pieces of a modular block hill. With the two large blocks connected on the large end, and the square centered, it becomes a hill that the 15mm units will be able to stand at each level. If the large blocks are connected on the short end, then they can act as a partial backdrop for the games.
The hill in its “centerfield” form. It’ll be seen on the green mat with figures soon enough, then we’ll all be able to decide our thoughts on it. From my view in-person, it’s so cute and seems like it’s meant for toy soldiers.
I painted up some tree stumps, but I didn’t want to chase them down or lose them, so I decided to make them a collective terrain piece. Not sure if I’m sold on the gloss varnish, but we’ll see.
I’ve also started work on the dungeon walls my brother in law printed up for my birthday present last year. Here they are fully primed.
Here’s where I stopped last night. Pieces on the right were base coated and dry-brushed, pieces on the left were only base coated in grey. Once all of them are dry brushed with a lighter grey-khaki mixture, I’ll wash them in black to really bring out the crevices.
My next post will feature the finished dungeon walls (hopefully) and a small battle with the wooden block hill as the center piece! Stay tuned!
Wow you have been busy! The spiders are great - I keep meaning to look out for some cheap plastic critters!
ReplyDeleteWe’ve got the local dollar store here that used to sell them in bulk on the cheap. The hobby shop nearby also tends to have surprisingly good deals! I’m trying to pump out all the painting before Christmas (and my birthday which happens to fall just after Christmas!), since I’ve still got things I’ve been “working on”since the last holiday season. Lol!
DeleteThis is the time of year to get them. With Halloween coming they, along with plastic ants and flys (and cockroaches), are readily available in inexpensive packages of about 100. Buy the way, everything seems to be coming along nicely.
ReplyDeleteExactly! I’m going to head to the dollar and hobby stores soon to see if there’s anything I can use. Target had a set of wooden buildings for a few dollars that I picked up to paint and add to my terrain kit.
