A Small Game

I played a small game with my freshly built and painted stands. I recently completed the other stand of bills and a stand of crossbows. I’ve got a very well painted (for me) knight that I’ve yet to base, too.

The setup was a small army of knights with their retinue spears and mercenary crossbows attacking resisting longbow and bills. Imagine, if you will, a Hussite Wars situation—crusading knights attacking peasants with unique characteristics—if the Hussites were fielding English longbowmen instead of war-wagons…and if it took place in the 13th century. I said imagine!

The longbows had some abysmal rolls during the first turns, but eventually took out the foot knights and crossbows, while the mounted knights dispatched a unit of bills and longbows before having to recoil for a turn (pictured above).

Despite the longbow’s bonus to shooting and the bill’s bonus against cavalry, the knights won the day, with their retinue spears dispatching the longbows and the knights routing the remaining bills.

Maybe the knights were quelling a peasant rebellion, maybe the Protestant reformation happened 200 years early and on the other side of Europe, or maybe the War of the Breton succession was instead the War of the British succession and an English levy was attempting to hold of a French force (that actually sounds fun…). The world may never know the exact time and place of this skirmish, but we do know this: the knights won.

I’ve not been posting much as the past few weeks have been very busy. I’m deciding on where to focus my gaming energy, but my brain is very unfocused of late. I’m going to try to set up a more robust game in the next few days. Maybe something with the 1/72 medievals?

  1. The newly painted figures are looking good - you could do a nice Mini-Campaign with small battles like this...

    1. I’m seriously considering Khurasan’s new “GOR” (Gremlins of Raumm) figures for my collection. They’d be a nice fantasy enemy for a mini-campaign.

    1. Just my mint tin rules. I gave the bills +1 against horse and the bows +1. They had a lower armor class so I thought it was fitting.
