Goblins and Lizards, a battle of Titans

I played a game finally today! Goblins vs Lizards. An all-out turf war.

The field: To the left are the lizards, they appear to have conquered an old temple and erected an altar. To the right are goblins, intent on spreading their territory in the ruined city and ending the threat to their tribes.

The lizards have a dragon guarding the entrance to their tunnel, their hideous prayers have apparently worked—so long as they keep the great beast fed well and a steady stream of treasures heading its way.

The goblins are being led by a warlord (a massive creature for a goblin, likely a half-ogre) riding atop a great terror lizard. He leads a horde of goblins with a handful of bugbears peppered in for strengthening the ranks.

The goblins have the first move, and not much more. They push forward a pair of archers to start thinning the numbers of advancing lizards, and a couple of warriors to protect them.

The next several moves see nearly all of the lizard men take the field, along with their scaly deity-incarnate. The lizard men are bigger, stronger, and faster than the goblins, so they have the advantage if they can move more of their numbers into contact at once.

The warlord begin his motion forward and his warriors finally get to move as well.

Bugbears move in to close on flanking lizards while toward the top of the field, by the old watchtower, 4 lizards have been reduced to two, dispatching a goblin and a bugbear along the way.

The green dragon moves quickly, lashing flames at the warlord and his posse. Just look at those special effects! Hollywood, eat your heart out.

The bugbear shock troops close on the dragon, along with a couple of goblins. They are intent on butchering it as quickly as possible…

While their comrades cover their flanks.

Meanwhile, just below, a micro-drama unfolds as a goblin red-cap, having slain a filthy troglodyte blocking the door, now pushes through the threshold to battle a blow-dart spewing lizard inside.

The bugbears quickly found themselves being butchered by the great wyrm, while the red-cap cleared the building of any scaled threats…

And quickly found himself hiding inside to avoid the flames!

Most of the remaining goblins were archers, whose rudimentary accoutrements are ineffective against dragon scales. They decide to climb the old watch tower to have an advantage against any remaining lizards nearby.

The warlord crashes into the dragon, and a battle of titans begins!

He and his dinosaur mount are flanked by the remaining lizard warriors, who succeed in a piercing stab or two.

The two champions begin a dance of death, clashing, recoiling, circling. Wounds are mounting up, the dragon is at 5/6, while the warlord has a slight advantage at 4/6! A lone goblin drummer beats out a rhythm to inspire his liege, his only hope of survival.

The dragon leaps back, atop the old watchtower, melting most of the remaining goblins a single blast of fire.

The warlord charges, and the two begin their duel again!

After several intense turns of dice rolling, wherein the warlord gained a fifth wound, the goblin champion finally smote the great wyrm, sending it crashing down in the rubble of the tower. Victory was secured by the goblins, if only by the skin of their teeth.

This goblin warlord has become a hero to his kind, striking down a dragon! We will see what this means for the inhabitants of the ruined city…and perhaps even beyond to the Baron’s lands.

I finally got around to playing my game! It was fun to break out some big pieces and use a bigger field. Next game is going to see some bows and bills for sure.

  1. I love the new additions to your fantasy hordes! Are they DnD or Pathfinder minis?

    1. The dragon and the Dino-riding orc are from the old Heroscape board game. I was blessed enough to come into possession of two full sets with expansions. One I purchased, the other was given to me by a friend. I’m going to incorporate the various figures into some more games, when fitting.

    1. It was, the T-Rex Mount looks like something out of an old black and white film, too, and that just added something for me. We get too realistic with our fantasy creatures nowadays, in my personal opinion.
